Update on 2011 projects

Keeping with our theme of lists, I wanted to take a look at another list I’d developed earlier in the year. We’ve got a lot of stuff we want to get accomplished this year so lets take a look at how we’re doing.

The things we wanted to get accomplished:

  • Hang artwork that has yet to find a home since we’ve moved (some of it is hung… other is still looking for a home)
  • Clean out and organize the office closet
  • Paint the scrap booking nook (I at least picked out a color)
  • Put together the scrap booking nook
  • Burn/save all pictures to CDs from computer
  • Pillows & Living room curtains/valances — I’ve been putting this off for a while, but mostly because we didn’t have blinds in the living room, but I’ve got a friend who does this and I can’t wait to have her over for her opinion (http://urbanecology.etsy.com).  I’m thinking texture and green… I wonder if she’ll agree?
  • On the same lines, we need new coffee and side tables in our living room, desperately!  The wood ones we got for our apartment from Fleet Farm are not doing it for me.
  • Actually, add to this section that we need to get our ceiling fan in the living room fixed.
  • Paint spare bedroom
  • Finishing my wedding albums (I have yet to put together a book for the showers, rehearsal, getting ready that morning, and all of our formal pics from the photog).
  • Find something to go above the entertainment center in the living room (I picture a big clock)
  • I want to get the lyrics to our first dance song printed on canvas and put somewhere- probably the office or spare bedroom for now.
  • I also want to get some of our wedding pictures printed on canvas and stretched.  Still trying to decide where I exactly want to put them and which pictures to print, but I’m sure I’ll figure it out eventually.

And here are the things we wanted to get purchased:

  • Humidifier System
  • End tables and coffee tables (as previously mentioned)
  • New bedside tables
  • Deep freezer
  • Patio furniture
  • Hand towel bar for the half bath
  • 4 extra counter height chairs for the dining room table

It seems like we haven’t got much done but to be fair, we’ve been busy. I have a lot of things on tap for the spring and it will be exciting to cross more things off the list. We have purchased a handful of things and its nice to have those items and not have to worry about getting those bought. There’s still a lot of stuff on this list, but now that it’s light out past 4:30pm its easier to get projects accomplished and I bet by July 4th this entire list will be demolished :)

A list

Anyone who knows me (especially my husband) will tell you that I can make a list for days. Unfortunately, my type A personality makes lists and itineraries sound exciting. Plus, it helps me keep things in order.

Having been married less than a year, I’m surprised how many times we’ve already been asked when we’re going to have kids. Granted I LOVE babies and enjoy spending time with all my little babies, after thinking about what we really want at this point in our life, we decided it’s time to be a little selfish. Sleeping in on a non work day… Going to the mall uninterrupted… Grocery shopping without a screaming 2-year-old… All things we want to enjoy for a little while.

So, it should come as no surprise that I decided to develop a list of things I’d like to try to do before we enter the next stage of our life. So, without further ado, my “bucket” list of things I want to do before we have children:

- learn to speak Italian, just because
- take dance lessons, not sure what kind… Maybe ballroom, maybe salsa?
- take financial peace university
- develop a plan to become debt free
- devise a baby budget
- save $x (to be determined)
- make a family mission statement
- go to San Francisco
- spend Christmas on the beach, because we all know once you have babies Christmas will never be the same!
- get my body into optimum shape and keep it until pregnancy.
- go to Vegas
- recreate family tree
- see a game at Turner Field
- kayak
- sky dive… I know once I have babies I’ll never do this!
- go on a cruise*
- spend the night in a historical hotel
- read 30 books
- spend all day in bed together, no plans just relaxing
- learn our medical history
- finish wedding guest book
- take a photography class, because I know you’ll want to see good pictures of those babies!
- go to Ireland*

*those are the two things I’d be willing to wait and do another time but it would be amazing to do them before.

I’ve been very lucky through the years and have been able to experience lots of different and wonderful experiences. As the saying goes- every man dies… not ever man lives. I’ve had a very wonderful life so far and I look forward to continuing to ‘check things off. There are also some things I’ve already done and places I’ve already been that I’m happy I can cross off “the list” including:
- go to Hawaii (and have caught a wave, swam with sting rays and saw whales in the wild)
- go to New Orleans (had a hurricane on Bourbon Street and bought a voodoo doll)
-go to Disneyworld & Disneyland
-graduate college
-be happy and confident with myself
-find someone I love more than anything
-get married
-buy a house
-have some really awesome friends I know I can count on
-learn how to cook & bake (which I quite actually enjoy)
-go to San Diego
-travel to many different states (to this day I’ve traveled to 26 states and look forward to crossing more off my list)
-get a puppy
-travel to New York (did a ton including- Times Square, Broadway play, off broadway, visited all the galleries and museums, saw the Today Show & Conan O’Brien, saw celebrities filing movies, had pizza and cheesecake, saw the Statue of Liberty, Wall Street, Ground Zero, shopped at Macy’s, rode the subway and took a taxi, and so much more!)
-saw the river being dyed green in Chicago for St. Patrick’s day including the parade
-sang a solo in front of hundreds of people
-spoke in front of hundreds of people
-danced in front of a sold out arena (to try to win a trip for my husband- didn’t quite work out)
-dutch danced in wooden shoes in Pella
-picked a tulip during Tulip Time
-visited Mexico & Canada
-influenced someone else’s life
-been to multiple MLB games/stadiums (Wrigley, Old Yankee, Old Busch, New Busch, Kauffman)

February vacation

In the middle of training a new employee, I was trying to get ready for vacation. We were leaving to help the Mr’s good friend, Deuce, celebrate his marriage in Longboat Key, Florida. Very excited for the opportunity to escape from the winter doldrums of Iowa, we began getting ready for our vacation the way any good family does- by planning our plane snacks.

Extra important in this day and age of nothing is free, which means snacks on the plane are non existent. I stocked up at Trader Joe’s and Target on a little bit of everything.

For sweet we covered everything from chocolate to lemon with Butterfingers, Snickers and Twix for chocolate and Trader Joe’s Lemon Heart Cookies. We also had Trader Joe’s Crispy Chocolate Chip Cookies and Chocolate Cats.

For neutral I grabbed some animal crackers.

For gummy I packed Dots, Jujyfruits and Target strawberry fruit snacks (I could literally eat these things every day).

To round out the group with salty I packed Snyder’s sourdough nibblers. Also addicting, these things could get eaten up very quickly and since I know the Mr. loves these, I packed double.

Once safely packed inside our carry on, we were able to move on with the rest of our packing. An entire suit case of swim suits, shorts and flip flops later and we were ready to go. Well, sort of. The Mr. hates flying. He’s not afraid of it, per say, but the thought of getting on a plane is something he absolutely hates. He did a pretty good job not thinking about it this time around too far in advance, but by the time we got to the airport on Sunday he was checked out. In advance we worked with our chiropractor who does acupuncture to maybe release some of that stress and help which may have helped, but it was still very touch and go while waiting to board the plane. No matter how many times you tell him its safer than driving to the airport, he won’t listen because for him its all about not being in control of the plane. While he wasn’t loving getting on the plane, he did it and we were off and going!

Smoothest flight ever and two and a half hours later we’re in the St. Pete airport (PIE- ha!). Palm trees and a warm breeze welcomed us as we landed and walked outside. We grabbed our luggage, drove the 45 minutes to the condo and were finally able to relax. We started our vacation with a trip across the way to “Five Guys Burgers and Fries”. They keep it very basic, burger- cheese burger- bacon cheese burger, single or double with all the toppings you could imagine but the product is very good and the fries only come from one farmer- their claim to fame.

I thought the burger was good, the cheese was melted just perfectly. The fries were only ok. I don’t think I’ll be craving them any time soon.

Monday was spent eating Waffle House, relaxing by the pool and soaking up some of that Florida sunshine. With temperatures in the upper 70′s-80′s all week, we sure got lucky knowing that the temperatures could range anywhere from 50′s to 80′s.

Pool Side

We also had the rehearsal and welcome dinner Monday evening, which were both fabulous. It’s hard to go wrong when you’re by the ocean and it’s in the 70’s!

At the welcome dinner, we had a chip bar which was really interesting. There were 3 types of chips – sweet potato, regular kettle chips and fried plantains- along with about 10 different kinds of salsas, dips, etc. I was a really neat idea. Following the chip bar we had a nice little BBQ. After a couple margaritas though, this girl was ready to call it a night!

Tuesday we went to breakfast at Yoder’s, a restaurant serving Amish food. It was pretty good. I just had your standard breakfast with eggs, toast and ham. It was an experience non-the-less! We were able to relax a little bit more by the pool and enjoy the beautiful weather before getting ready for the wedding.

When we got to the resort for the wedding it was perfect weather… slight breeze, sun shining… the chairs were all set up, so I took my seat as the Mr. took care of his duties as a groomsmen. They all looked so handsome/beautiful and the background setting of the beach was picture perfect. It was a beautiful ceremony. I, like usual, cried. They kissed, sealed the deal and we took a really nice group photo. Cocktail hour and dinner were great, but it was so good to go home and sleep. Basking in the sun really does wear a girl out!

Beautiful Bride

Wednesday, our last day on vacation before we flew back, we got up and ran a couple places before eating lunch at Phillippi Creek. It was some really good seafood. The Mr. had the steamed seafood platter (King Crab Legs for him) while I settled on the seafood kabob. Both were delish! I was happy to finally get some seafood in my belly!

After lunch we headed to Siesta Key Beach. The sand was like powdered sugar under my toes. It was so wonderful and relaxing. We slept, we walked, we shelled, we drank, we played. It was a great afternoon and as the sun was setting and the day was winding down, I was sad that we were having to leave so soon. I feel like we were just getting started with our vacation.

The good news is that we’re already planning our return trip and all of the fun and relaxing things we want to do… and the best part is that we can go back whenever we want! So, here’s to good seafood, great sand and drinks in our hands! Our vacation to FLA may be done for now, but we will return!
